How to Provision a Grandstream GXW42XX series VoIP Gateway
Provisioning Requirements:
Protocols: The GXW42XX V2 supports HTTP, HTTPS, TFTP, and FTP for pulling configuration files, as well as TR-069 for management.
Configuration File Formats:
XML (Recommended): Named cfgMAC.xml (e.g., cfg000b820102ab.xml). These files use a list of "P-values" (e.g., <P2>admin</P2>) to define settings.
Proprietary Binary: Named cfgMAC.bin. These must be created using the Grandstream Configuration Tool.
Default Credentials: The V2 series has a unique password printed on the label on the back of the device (unlike V1, which used admin/admin).
Setup Steps:
Step A: Point the Gateway to Your Server
There are two primary ways to tell the device where your provisioning server is located:
Manual Entry (Web UI):
Log in to the device via its IP address (find this by dialing *** then 02 on an attached analog phone).
Navigate to Maintenance > Upgrade and Provisioning.
Set Upgrade via to your preferred protocol (e.g., HTTPS).
Enter your server's URL in the Config Server Path field.
DHCP Option 66/43:
Configure your DHCP server to send the provisioning server URL via Option 66 (TFTP) or Option 43. When the GXW42XX boots, it will automatically request its config from that path.
Prepare the Configuration Files:
MAC-Specific Files: Create a file named cfg[MAC_ADDRESS].xml for each unit. This ensures specific SIP credentials are sent to the correct hardware.
Generic Config: You can also use a generic cfg.xml file for global settings that apply to all gateways on your network.
P-Value Mapping: Refer to the Grandstream P-value Template to identify which codes correspond to the settings you need (e.g., SIP Server, Port settings, etc.).
Initial Test:
Place the cfgMAC.xml file in the root directory of your provisioning server.
Reboot the GXW42XX V2 via the Web UI or by power cycling.
The device will request the file, apply settings, and reboot if necessary.
